Peel Ports Group x Ecocem - Adding value, every step of the way

The challenge

To meet growing demand for low-carbon cement products, Ecocem – a European leader in providing high-performance, low carbon cement used in concrete and construction – needed a reliable and efficient logistics network to facilitate import and distribution from its production facilities in Dunkirk, France, and Moerdijk, the Netherlands.

Ecocem also faced challenges in minimising transport times, emissions, and costs while ensuring consistent supply to key markets. Additionally, Brexit introduced complexities in customs processing, and maintaining rapid turnaround times for vessels became increasingly critical to avoid delays and additional costs.

Ecocem’s products are noted for their excellent technical qualities, including durability, workability and strength, enabling significant levels of clinker replacement and decarbonisation.

The solution

Peel Ports has been instrumental in supporting Ecocem to deliver seamless import and distribution of GGBS. Investment in infrastructure saw two bulk import terminals developed at the Port of Sheerness in 2017 and Runcorn in 2016, with the terminals holding 7.5kt and 14kt storage silos respectively.

The port-centric logistics offered by Peel Ports streamlined Ecocem's supply chain by centralising key operations at the port to enhance efficiency, while value-added services such as inventory management, customs clearance, and real-time stock visibility further supported Ecocem’s goals.

Additional enhancements such as quay-side pipework were implemented to improve unloading flexibility and reduce vessel turnaround times and minimise disruptions for Ecocem’s customers, while road network modifications within the ports simplified truck entry and exit to deliver smother operations.

Peel Ports’ ability to accommodate short-notice vessels has enabled Ecocem to maintain adequate levels of stock at all times, ensuring reliability for customers and mitigating unexpected supply chain disruptions.

The partnership has also played a role in advancing Ecocem’s sustainability ambitions to help its industry decarbonise cement by 70%, with direct access through London Medway reducing transport times and emissions, and in turn complements Peel Ports’ commitment to become a net-zero port operator by 2040.

Ecocem and Peel Ports’ ongoing partnership, built on mutual trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to excellence, is set to continue for many years to come.

Sally Anne Sherry, Ecocem Managing Director, UK & Ireland, said: “In Peel Ports, Ecocem has found a partner that is willing to collaborate and find solutions as our requirements develop and expand. Peel provides best-in-class port services, employing high-quality personnel not only to deliver these services, but to support us in achieving our objectives as a business.”

With storage facilities in Sheerness and Runcorn, Ecocem is well-positioned to serve global and UK markets, with these strategic locations providing access to the construction markets of London, the Southeast, and the Northwest.
