MSC growth strategy supported by Port of Liverpool

A senior delegation from Mediterranean Shipping Company (UK) Limited reaffirmed their commitment to the Port of Liverpool during a visit to the Port on 22nd February. Together with Peel Ports Group (Containers) Commercial team, members of MSC’s Commercial and Trade teams spent the day seeing the Port’s infrastructure and capability for themselves, before developing a joint strategy that will support customers seeking to import their cargo closer to its end destination in the northern hinterland of the UK. With approximately 30% of the market within Liverpool’s natural hinterland and 60% of the UK and Ireland closer to the Port of Liverpool compared to southern UK ports, there is an increasing demand for shipping services to offer a northern load/discharge option.

MSC’s UK West Coast Service, already a vital link between Türkiye and Liverpool, offers customers a reliable route for cargo transportation between the UK and European markets, but also provides customers with reliable ‘mother vessel to mother vessel’ transshipment between India, Pakistan and the Far East to the key UK West Coast port of Liverpool. By leveraging this product to bring cargo closer to its end destination, cargo owners are able to reduce supply chain cost and carbon emissions, whilst also increasing supply chain reliability and certainty, avoiding unnecessary complexity and duration of inland distribution to/from southern ports.

Ocean Network Express visit Port of Liverpool.

The Port of Liverpool recently hosted senior executives from Ocean Network Express UK. As well as an extensive tour of the Port facilities, we discussed the potential for the Port of Liverpool to support ONE's strategy of sustainable growth, simplifying ONE customers’ supply chain across the four pillars of Accessibility, CostCarbon and Congestion.

Loading and discharging cargo near to its origin or destination creates significant benefit towards supply chain certainty and resilience by reducing the risk of delay from congested UK road and rail networks. Lower overall transportation cost and lower carbon emissions are also achieved when short haul cargo deliveries replace the long journeys required to deliver from southern ports into the northern UK hinterland.
