Peel Ports named Clean Port Operator of the Year!
Blog from Lewis McIntyre, Director of Port Services
I am delighted to announce that we have been named the Clean Maritime Operator of the Year at the Maritime UK Awards 2023. This prestigious award recognises our commitment in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, and follows a string of industry awards and recognition throughout 2022.
At Peel Ports, we believe that being a responsible business means taking an active role in protecting and enhancing the environments that we operate within, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.
This commitment is reflected in range of carbon saving initiatives already undertaken, such as the transition to HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) as an alternative to diesel and ensuring 95% of our vehicle fleet is electric.
Over the past year, we launched our 5 year sustainability strategy and our ‘Enabling The Future’ programme, both of which are aimed at four sustainability pillars: Jobs for the future, Everyone Welcome, Our World and Our Community.
Our strategy encompasses a number of targets, including promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace; a commitment to operating sustainable, smart ports that facilitate low carbon transport modes; reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing our marine environment. By adopting this approach, we hope to make a meaningful impact creating long-term value for people, places and planet.
Over the coming year, we have plans to install up to 35,000 solar panels across our port estate, once completed, the project will generate enough electricity to power 20% of the Port of Liverpool’s needs.
Clearly sustainability goes beyond our own operations, so we are working closely with partners across the supply chain to encourage sustainable practices by exploring shoreside power, electric HGV charging points, Hydrogen fuel stations and additional rail services to reduce co2 emissions associated with road miles.
Winning the Clean Maritime Operator of the Year award is a testament to the hard work of our teams across a range of functions and their commitment to sustainability. We now continue to strive to lead the way in sustainable port operations. Thank you to Maritime UK for this recognition, and congratulations to all the other nominees.
